No New Taxes

In response to an email from Tim Eyman, with statewide media cc'd of course, Governor Chris Gregoire has vowed to use increases in sales, B&O, or property taxes only as a last resort - and has agreed that the public must approve any taxes so requested.

This from a man who singlehandedly handicapped the ferry system, broke school budgets and may push us into a deficit this year. Eyman has cost taxpayers far more than he has saved.

Gregoire, meanwhile, has to toe the "no new taxes" line just like any and every politician, leaving a state budget shortfall in sight, allowing people to forget (again) that their tax invesments actually pay for the state services (police, fire, education, etc.) thay want and need, and ignoring a budget system that is about as stable as a two-legged stool.

Some people might suggest

Some people might suggest that the looming deficit has little to do with TAX policy and lots to do with BUDGET policy.

Spending has increased 31% in four years! Tax cuts in those same years were few and far between...

So we can increase the taxes to catch up with the spending. Or we can cut the wasteful, unnecessary spending to get back to living within our means -- which is what Dino Rossi and Gary Locke WORKED TOGETHER to accomplish.
