Voters Uninterested In Owning Elections

The mainstream media hasn’t yet posted any news about the Town Meeting held last week to discuss the King County Council’s proposal to have taxpayers pay for political campaigns. King County says over 130 people attended the public meeting on the subject, with few against and many in favor.

None of the Council members have announced which new tax will be directed toward funding political campaigns, nor have they addressed the problems that have accompanied such well-intentioned public financing in Portland, OR.

Is the lack of coverage a sign that the "voter-owned" elections idea isn’t getting any traction? Have voters had it up to here with new elections rules, like the top-two primary, that make elections more complicated and less democratic? Is it time to get back to representative democracy as the founders envisioned it?

Or could it be that voters pay enough already, in time lost, mail recycled and brain cells frazzled by political hit pieces, posturing and pandering. We don’t need another tax to force us to pay more directly.
