Rep. Helen Sommers, the long-serving Democrat from Seattle's 36th District, will retire at the end of her term, the Seattle Times is reporting.
Sommers, who has served in the legislature for 36 years, has been mum on her widely expected retirement until today.
"It's been a fabulous experience," Sommers said.
Her seat is likely to spawn a very high profile, and very expensive, primary battle to replace her. Two well-known Democrats, Reuven Carlyle and John Burbank, have already announced their candidacy and raised tens of thousands of dollars.
Although the deadline to register to vote by mail passed on Saturday, you still have until Oct. 20 to register in person.
