Mending the rift
There's less bad blood between Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon and the County Council these days. (Jeff Switzer, Everett Herald)

An open book
Congress has started the process of deciding which earmarks will be included in the budget this year.

Requests are streaming in to the appropriations committees in each chamber, with some House panels considering specific requests in hearings this month.

Most members won't reveal what they are pursuing until they know if they are successful.

Not Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wa. In April, he publicized the 59 requests he had submitted. (Jerry Cornfield, Everett Herald)

Challenges from all sides
Republican Joseph James is running for the Legislature out of a converted gas station on St. Johns Boulevard filled with his oversized blue-and-yellow campaign signs.

Tim Probst’s campaign operates out of a nondescript office suite he shares with several other Democratic candidates in a building just off Interstate 205 near Gher Road.

As usual, Rep. Jim Dunn will be running his campaign out of his house and car. (Kathie Durbin, The Columbian)

Barack-flip
U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell followed up on Hillary Clinton’s withdrawal from the presidential race Saturday by announcing her support for Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States. (The Columbian)

Keane’s competition
WATERVILLE — Douglas County Commissioner Dane Keane, who filed his candidacy for a fourth four-year term Monday, had three opponents by the end of filing on Friday.

Keane, a Rock Island Republican, drew Dale Snyder, Waterville, and Terry Barnes, East Wenatchee, as Republican opponents; and Russell Clark, Rock Island mayor, as a Democrat. (Dan Wheat, Wenatchee World)

Rebranding
Voters expecting to see Republican Dino Rossi matching up again with Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire might be a little surprised when they check out the ballots for the August vote.

That's because Rossi, strictly speaking, won't be listed as a Republican. Instead, he's running under the "G.O.P." label. (Gregory Roberts, Post-Intelligencer)

Going statewide
WENATCHEE —A former Chelan County treasurer filed his candidacy for state treasurer Tuesday.

Allan Martin was Chelan County treasurer from 1993 to 1998 and has worked for state Treasurer Mike Murphy since then, becoming assistant state treasurer. (Wheat, Wenatchee World)
