Ag director Loveland steps down

Valoria Loveland, the director of the state's Department of Agriculture, has announced her retirement today from the post. The former State Senator from the Tri-Cities area was first tabbed for the job by Gary Locke and was re-appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire.

"Since her reappointment as agriculture director in April 2005, Valoria has been a tireless advocate for the farming community," the Gregoire said in a statement."

Loveland, for her part, returned the kind words for the governor.

"I have very much loved working for Governor Gregoire," Loveland said. "She knows how to govern, and that means surrounding herself with people who know what the citizens of Washington want and expect, and who also know how to deliver. I will miss working within the ‘can-do' environment the governor brings to state government."

Her deputy, Robert Gore, will take over the helm on an interim basis.
