Lonergan to stay in Pierce County executive race

Tacoma City Councilman Mike Lonergan has declared his intention to stay in the race for Pierce County Executive as an independent candidate, despite having failed in his bid to become the Republican candidate at the Pierce County GOP convention a week ago.

He had this to say in a release about his chances in the upcoming "ranked choice" vote that will be taking place for Pierce County-wide elections.

"At least four out of ten Republicans prefer me as their County Executive. This coupled with the support of 7 out of 10 Tacoma voters--including thousands of Democrats--in my last City Council election, spells victory for Mike Lonergan in this November's Ranked Choice Vote."

The Pierce County Executive race looks to be one of the most highly contested in the state. In addition to Lonergan, candidates running include Republican Shawn Bunney and Democrats Calvin Goings and Pat McCarthy.
