Shelly Short (R-Addy), who has built a strong political reputation in Northeastern Washington as Deputy District Director for Congresswoman Cathy McMorris-Rodgers and Field Coordinator for Congressman George Nethercutt before most recently serving as Senior Legislative Assistant to State Representative Joel Kretz, announced recently that she will be running for State Representative in the 7th District, Position 1.
She will host two campaign kickoff events later this month. On April 23 Short will appear at the Omak Elks Lodge at 5:30 PM, and the next day she will hold an event at Colville Jr. High at the same time. Nethercutt will be a special guest of the campaign in Colville.
Short has received the endorsement of outgoing Rep. Bob Sump as well as former Congressman Nethercutt. Sump's endorsement letter can be read below, and Short's campaign website can be found here.
Dear Friends,
As you probably know I am not seeking re-election in the House of Representatives in 2009. I am writing this letter to those of you who have supported me in the past.
Shelly Short is a candidate for my vacated position. I think Shelly Short is the candidate that would best continue with the ideas and principles that I have supported in the past and I believe Shelly Short would continue to support those same time honored traditions that the Seventh District has grown to expect from their State Legislators.
Shelly Short is dedicated to protecting our property rights, second amendment rights, and the local control of our children's education. Last but not least Shelly Short is committed to reducting [sic] our taxes. I would count it a great honor if you would accept my recommendation of Shelly Short to you as the successor to my vacated House Seat.
Sincerely,
Bob Sump
State Representative

Shelly: Sweet, But We CAN Do Better!
Shelly Short is a nice lady and has worked hard as a Republican staffer. However, after travelling the 7th legislative district extensively, I know that Mrs. Short does not meet the needs of the district as she is not a leader. Shelly campaigned for months behind the scenes, without filing with the PDC and was the constant shadow of Ken Oliver and Joel Kretz. If I were her, I would not be proud of Jon & Melanie Weiss endorsement. Mr. Weiss was behind a smear campaign against our Congresswoman, a former 7th district state representative, during her 2004 primary to succeed George Nethercutt. Mr. Weiss alleged that our current Congresswoman essentially slept her way to the top in Olympia and we all know that is a lie. He was also behind numerous other gross rumors intended to smear Rep. Kretz's predecessor. Of course, that is representative to some degree of Shelly Short's integrity. We deserve nothing better than a top notch leader who has it in their heart to represent us, not someone who is an establishment candidate, a yes man, and a dishonest person who has been seen by many running around the district violating PDC regulations over the past year.
Oops
I like Shelly. I talked with her a couple of different times when I needed to meet with Rep. Kretz, and she'd be a good candidate.
It's just unfortunate that her website says that April 7th is Independence Day:
