At least one Wash. Clinton delegate switching

Hillary Clinton's own words, part of what many pundits thought were a distinct campaign strategy, may come back to haunt her here in Washington.

"There are elected delegates, caucus delegates and superdelegates, all for different reasons, and they're all equal in their ability to cast their vote for whomever they choose. Even elected and caucus delegates are not required to stay with whomever they are pledged to."

Clinton said that in a recent interview with Newsweek. Earlier in the week PolitickerWA linked to Eli Sanders' slog post asking for Clinton delegate turncoats, and yesterday he presented his evidence, and at least one local delegate has changed her mind since February 9.

Karina Putnam-Kaminsky, a manager at a downtown Seattle restaurant, is fed up. She was elected as a Clinton delegate at the Washington State caucuses on February 9 but says she's become so frustrated with Clinton's win-at-all-costs-and-despite-all-odds approach that she's going to switch her support to Obama when the Legislative District caucuses take place on April 5.

"It's highly unlikely that Clinton will get the nomination," Putnam-Kaminsky said. She went on to criticize the "wild, crazy, incendiary claims" that have been coming from the Clinton camp in recent weeks and said the "final straw" was Clinton's push to get the results of Florida and Michigan's rule-violating primaries to be counted. "It seemed kind of desperate," Putnam-Kaminsky said.

Whether or not Ms. Putnam-Kaminsky gets elected to the state convention is another story. The Democratic leglislative district caucuses, to which Putnam-Kaminsky is a delegate, take place next Saturday, April 5, and congressional district caucuses are in May. The state convention, which takes place in Spokane in June, elects delegates to the national convention where the nominee is selected.

This is not the first case of caucus votes potentially changing over time in Washington. So far two counties, Whatcom and Lincoln, have elected to send pro-Ron Paul delegations to the Republican state convention. The GOP presumptive nominee John McCain won the state's Republican caucuses on February 9 by a narrow margin over Mike Huckabee, who has dropped out of the race, and Paul, who is still a candidate.

LD to CD

Thanks for bringing that mistake to light. Amendments made.

A correction.

Ms. Putnam-Kaminsky has already been elected to the King County convention. Precinct delegates are elected to their LD and county meetings. The LD caucuses elect delegates to the CD and State meetings, where, finally, national delegates will be selected. The King County convention is a platform generating event, but really irrelevant in the delegate selection process.

While switches are possible and do occur, the greatest impact is probably going to be felt in the LD attendance, where a 15% threshold will apply. If a handful of Clinton delegates just don't show up because they're just fed up, well, that could shut her out in some of the weaker performing LDs. Happened to Bill in '92.
