Rossi campaign event's ugly turn caught on tape

Dino RossiDino RossiThe Washington State Democratic Party released a video today shot before a Dino Rossi campaign event in Ellensburg over the weekend, where Kittitas County Republican Party Chair Dr. Matt Manweller, a Central Washington University political science professor, unleashed a tirade on Democratic Party volunteers protesting Rossi's stance on the minimum wage.

Rossi recently said he would consider looking into cutting the minimum wage for entry-level teenage workers by $1.50, and in the past has voted on measures to freeze mandated minimum wage increases during periodsof high unemployment.

"Working families are struggling through tough economic times under the policies of George Bush that Republican Dino Rossi has backed 100% of the way," said Washington State Democratic Party Chair Dwight Pelz in the release. "The fact a multi-millionaire like Rossi would suggest to struggling families making the minimum wage that he'd cut their pay and that a top Rossi advisor refers to minimum wage workers with degrading insults like ‘stupid' and ‘dumber than a post' shows how disturbingly out-of-touch Rossi and the Republicans are - and why a Bush Republican like Rossi can't be trusted to run our state."

Manweller repeatedly spoke to the protesters, engaging in an off-and-on argument for three minutes about the merits of the state's minimum wage policy, which is to increase it based on inflation every year.

"Only somebody as dumb as Gregoire would endorse it," Manweller said at the beginning of the confrontation. When told by the Democratic volunteers about  single moms trying to make ends meet on a meager salary Manweller shot back, "This policy hurts single moms. There would be 100,000 more single moms with a job."

Later on, when told there were over 300,000 people who supported increasing the minimum wage, Dr. Manweller responded with an insult.

"You and 300,000 people are dumber than a post," he said. "Your stupidity is harming my county."

Reached for comment, Dr. Manweller said he stood by what he said.

"They are fundamentally wrong on the minimum wage. Every academic knows they are wrong and they don't care," he told PolitickerWA.com about supporters of an increased minimum wage. "It is pure demagoguery and they just don't care."

His only regret was the phrasing of his comments.

"I should have used ‘ignorant'," Dr. Manwell said. "Anybody who supports an increase in the minimum wage is ignorant. I stand by my point."

Manweller also made it clear that he was speaking for himself and no one else, adding that he was not a top Rossi advisor, as the Democrats had called him. He was one of three idea bank committee chairs for Rossi's Forward Washington Foundation, a group he founded to advance policy ideas in the state between his two runs for governor.

"I am not even his county chair," Dr. Manweller said. "I sit on no advisory boards for him. [The term] ‘Top Rossi advisor' is completely inaccurate."

The Rossi campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Yes, Yes

Everyone remembers how the Clinton mininum wage hike in the early 90s ruined the economy for the rest of the decade. Someone might want to check a graph of unemployment during Democratic and Republican administrations before they go running their mouth and looking like a fool.

Shorter Republican Economics:

Increasing ability of working poor to buy bread = unsound social engineering

Giving the wealthy tax breaks to buy yachts = numerous entry level cabin boy/barancle scraper positions created

Min wage

Dino Rossi Clearly states "wage for entry-level teenage workers" but Democratic Party Chair Dwight Pelz implies that this effects working familys? How many entry level teenagers have families there supporting? I notice the TV ad's have all older adults in them ...no teenagers. The fact is if we raise min wage it will get harder for struggling families not easier.

Also its pretty sad that democrates blame Bush for WA states economics. Try pointing in the mirror. Gregiore is a spending machine that will not quit until we are broke...that means small business's get crushed first.

Although Dr. Manweller was a

Although Dr. Manweller was a bit rough with the young boy, his points were absolutely right. The real facts need to be heard regardless of tone. Inflating the minimum wage is not in the best interest of the general public. Minimum wage increases do more than effect employment. They also adversely impact the price of food, service goods, and retail items. Spill over does not account for enough in increased wages to compensate for these increases in cost. Minimum wage increases only benefit 2.75% of the working populace and has a negative effect on the other 97%. The issue of low income single mothers is all together different and not something that can be solved by and inflated minimum wage. If your interested on the real impact minimum wage increases have on employment here is something you should read.

Using government data from January 1979 to December 2004, the effect of minimum wage increases on retail and small business employment is estimated. Specifically, a 10 percent increase in the minimum wage is associated with a 0.9 to 1.1 percent decline in retail employment and a 0.8 to 1.2 percent reduction in small business employment.
These employment effects grow even larger for the low-skilled employees most affected by minimum wage increases. A 10 percent increase in the minimum wage is associated with a 2.7 to 4.3 percent decline in teen employment in the retail sector, a 5 percent decline in average retail hours worked by all teenagers, and a 2.8 percent decline in retail hours worked by teenagers who remain employed in retail jobs.
These results increase in magnitude when focusing on the effect on small businesses. A 10 percent increase in the minimum wage is associated with a 4.6 to 9.0 percent decline in teenage employment in small businesses and a 4.8 to 8.8 percent reduction in hours worked by teens in the retail sector.
These findings provide consistent evidence that minimum wage increases result in a significant decline in retail and small business employment. This finding is robust across several model specifications. Furthermore, these findings refute many of the claims raised in the FPI study so often cited in favor of minimum wage increases at the state and federal levels. The differences between these studies are likely a result of the more careful and appropriate methodological methods utilized in this study.
Taken together with other recent work, the results of this study suggest that low-skilled employees will find themselves unable to escape adverse labor market consequences resulting from minimum wage increases. Instead of passing these politically popular but destructive mandates, policymakers should consider other programs to help the working poor such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. The EITC is a far more effective policy tool to reduce poverty among poor families. Moreover, the EITC has the advantage of avoiding the adverse employment effects described in this study.
