Esser gives top 8 Republican pickup possibilities

Washington State Republican Party Chair Luke Esser weighed in on state legislative district politics yesterday, telling PolitickerWA.com which seats he thought were ripe for the picking.

In the state Senate, Esser said Republicans had very strong chances for pickups in the 2nd and 25th Legislative Districts. The 2nd District, which covers portions of rural Pierce and Thurston Counties, has Republican Randi Becker (R-Graham) taking on Democratic Sen. Marilyn Rasmussen (D-Eatonville), and in the 25th, which also covers eastern Pierce County, Michele Smith (R-Puyallup) is challenging Sen. Jim Kastama (D-Puyallup).

For the state House, Esser singled out Rep. Don Barlow's (D-Spokane) seat in the 6th Legislative District, retiring Rep. Patricia Lantz' (D-Port Orchard) seat in the 26th, retiring Rep. Fred Jarrett (D-Mercer Island) in LD41, Rep. Liz Loomis (D-Snohomish) in the 44th, Rep. Roger Goodman (D-Kirkland) in the 45th District, and 47th District Rep. Geoff Simpson (D-Covington).

The bright lights he was referring to in the takeover of those seats are Kevin Parker (R-Spokane), Jan Angel (R-Port Orchard), Steve Litzow (R-Mercer Island), Mike Hope (R-Everett), Toby Nixon (R-Kirkland) and Mark Hargrove (R-Covington), respectively.

Esser acknowledged that state House Republicans were in a deep hole, but added "we have tremendous opportunities in the districts I just mentioned

41st Maxwell/Litzow

After interviewing both candidates on education issues, Litzow proved superior. He has the same inteliigence and skill set that Ross Hunter and Rodney Tom have which is necessary to function effectively in Olympia on education. People from the education establishment, like Maxwell, tend to be self-defeating on these issues once they get to Olympia. Litzow is fully committed and a fighter for education while Maxwell is vague and likely to WEA controlled.

Steve Litzow

I have known Steve for many years, and he is the guy to get the job done in Olympia! He has made a great City Councilman for two terms, representing me, and I look forward to Steve working for us down in Olympia!

Don't Forget the 27th!

Often overlooked is the 27th Senate Seat. Larry Faulk won this seat 40 years ago when it was the 26th. No one in the Republican party expected him to win or supported him then, just as they are not this time. History looks to be repeating itself.

Correction / Details

The article refers to Rep. Marcie Maxwell in the 41st.

To be clear, this is an Open Seat (being vacated by Fred Jarrett (D-Mercer Island), running for Senate.

Marcie is neither a Rep. nor an incumbent. Based on her excellent record in Renton (School Board, Citizen of the Year, and many others), she will make a good Representative for many years.
