UPDATED: Muri high on colleague Bunney's chances

MINNEAPOLIS -Dick Muri, who serves on the Pierce County along with two of the top candidates for Pierce County Executive this year, Shawn Bunney (R-Bonney Lake) and Calvin Goings (D-Puyallup), feels that Bunney is best positioned to win the election this November.

"I think the dynamic of the ballot is going to give Shawn Bunney the clear advantage," Muri said.

Muri predicted that Goings would split votes almost equally with fellow Democrat Pat McCarthy, who is the Pierce County Auditor, giving Bunney the win. Also running is Mike Lonergan, who is running under the Executive Excellence banner. After each round of ballots, the last place candidate is eliminated, and their second choice than gets their vote. When one candidate receives a majority they are declared the winner.

Earlier this year Lonergan tried to win an official Republican endorsement at the last minute. When that attempt narrowly failed he changed his affiliation to the minor party.

As for how well the ranked choice vote will work, Muri said the interested parties would just have to wait and see. He called it a "grand experiment" and suggested that if it worked well then he anticipated that jurisdictions from all over the state would look to implement it, but if people were displeased they would know to stay away from it.
