The voters of the 3rd Congressional District, where incumbent Rep. Brian Baird (D-Vancouver) has drawn three challengers heading into next week's "top two" primary, will have their chance to vote a mixture of political ideology and war on both sides of the aisle. The reason being, each of the two major parties has two candidates with varying viewpoints on Iraq. Adam Wilson in The Olympian has a story about it today.
Within the Democratic Party, Baird has drawn a challenge from peace activist Cheryl Crist (D-Olympia) who also ran in 2004 and garnered 15 percent of the primary vote.
"At the time of the terrorist attacks," Crist told The Olympian, "I thought, 'What a violent world we live in,' and I would work for peace."
The Republicans meanwhile, have Michael Delavar (R-Washougal) who opposes the occupation squaring off against pro-war and pro-surge Christine Webb (R-Tumwater).
"Since he flipped on the war, it was an opportunity to be an anti-occupation Republican against a pro-war Democrat," Delavar said in the article. "We realized somebody has to make a challenge."
Webb, however, hopes to present her point that war is a success, even if she says Baird's other policies are not.
"I think he's been there so long that he's lost track of what our needs are back there," Webb offered.
Delavar's platform generates much support
Michael Delavar's strong platform has generated a large amount of support in the 3rd district. On the campaign trail Mr. Delavar has had a chance to meet many people and share his views. After personally meeting him and hearing where he stands on the issues I can say that I would be proud to have him represent me in Washington DC. He has not accepted money from special interests nor tailored his positions to garner their endorsements.
He stands firm on constitutional American principles like defending liberty and ensuring freedom by cutting government spending and involvement in our personal lives and restoring more local control over important issues where our voices are louder. He is the only candidate talking seriously about the dollar and how to cure the root causes of inflation. I'd suggest to anyone living in the 3rd district regardless of party to read his webpage and email or call with any questions you have.
