The seven Party Leader & Elected Official (PLEO) delegates pledged to Sen. Barack Obama at the Democratic were chosen Sunday. The group includes a wide range of elected officials from within the party with two state senators, a state representative, a mayor, county chair, county commissioner and even a precinct committee officer. See the full list below.
State Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-Seattle)
State Senator Chris Marr (D-Spokane)
State Representative Dave Upthegrove (D-Des Moines)
Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels
Spokane County Democratic Party Chair Kristiné Reeves
Precinct Committee Officer Shanna Sawatzki (46th LD)
Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart.
For Nickels, it will be his first national convention. He released a statement announcing his selection.
"This will be the first Democratic National Convention I've attended in my 36 years in politics -- I have been waiting for the right moment and the right candidate, and as Senator Obama has said, our moment is now," Nickels said in the release. "I am honored to represent Seattle at the national convention and am excited to do what I can to elect Barack Obama as our next president."
Upthegrove's Choice Disrespects the Democratic Party
I'm very disappointed that Dave Upthegrove was chosen as a delegate. 157 Democrats recently filed as candidates that prefer the "Democratic Party". Upthegrove chose to file as preferring the "Democrat Party".
The criteria for picking a PLEO delegate should have at least included that they actually recognize and respect the name of the party they claim to be a part of!
