Spokane GOP chair Fackler running as independent for insurance post

Jim Camden at the Spokesman-Review caught one of the state's more interesting filings this morning. Somewhat out of the blue, Spokane County Republican Party Chair Curtis Fackler decided to run against Democrat Mike Kreidler for state Insurance Commissioner.

But that's barely half the story. Far more noteworthy is Fackler's party preference. For the "top two" ballot, Fackler has filed under "no party preference." He says it was a strategic decision, and here is how the story goes in the Spokesman-Review:

But in strategizing for the top two primary, Fackler is guessing that having "No Preference" might be better than "Republican" after one's name on the West Side, while his GOP friends on the East Side will recognize his name and vote for him.

He said he called State GOP Chairman Luke Esser on Thursday to tell him about his plans. And Esser's reaction?

"He wasn't happy," Fackler said. But because there's no Republican incumbent in the seat, this doesn 't seem to violate and party rules, he added.

Running for this position is

Running for this position is great. We need a republican in there. I'm not so sure about him wimping out on his affiliations, but whatever works to get him into the position, I guess.

insurance

When insured parties experience a loss for a specified peril, the coverage entitles the policyholder to make a 'claim' against the insurer for the covered amount of loss as specified by the policy.
